A blog by Paul (Jack) Daniels, of all things technical being an independent publisher and some things not.

A year and a half ago, it was very exciting to submit and receive a copy of our first ever book (or rather, Elita's first) "The Darkening of Deacon" from the "Tree of Life" series. I have to say though, it was an exercise in a lot of pain, not physically (mostly), but rather the emotional trauma that went along with it, the number of things that happened which we just were not prepared for, it almost made us just want to throw the whole thing in the trash and walk away --- thankfully we didn't.
And here we are, 18 months later, finally putting Part-II out there "Before the Dawn", vastly less trouble, almost an anticlimax. At about 8pm tonight I just took the latest copy of Elita's manuscript (in LyX), added the front matter, some small tweaks, dumped to HTML, some more tweaks and then imported into Calibre to convert it over to a MOBI file, ready to go up to Amazon. Publishing your eBook/mobi to Amazon is such a simple affair now, you don't even need an ISBN (Save those for your print books)... best of all, it was ready to go and people were buying it only 2 hours later.
The massive difference in the emotional toll between the first time and this time is hard to state, but I am greatly pleased that now it's such a simple event that we can focus our energies on promoting the books instead.
...speaking of which... Buy it now for your Kindle at Amazon, for $3.99 ;)
