A friend of mine, Katrina Whittaker, introduced me to a zombie romance book called “Warm Bodies”. Very interesting story! The main character is called R, I guess because he can't remember his name. He's a young man with an existential crisis--he is a zombie. He shuffles through an America destroyed by war, social collapse, and the mindless hunger of his undead comrades, but he craves something more than blood and brains. He can speak just a few grunted syllables, but his inner life is deep, full of wonder and longing. He has no memories, no identity, and no pulse, but he has dreams.
I haven't read the book yet, but I took a peek at the sample and it's quite an interesting take on the typical mindless brain-eating zombie. It's funny because originally I wanted to write my romance story with 'genuine' zombies but with a twist - I sort of wanted a "Death Becomes Her" feel to my zombies, where they're quite attractive in their own special gruesome way, but they have to be kept together by special means (that's a secret), and they have to keep their minds active, or they rot and degenerate into something really nasty. I also wanted ghosts and goblins and other weirdos in the story, so this twist has taken me in a completely different direction to what I had intended...and now I'm excited and nervous to know if I've pulled it off. I posted some snippets from the book on facebook and my readers have given me huge encouragement. Now I'm working feverishly to get the ending finished to they can finally read it and give me the verdict. Let's hope I haven't gone off the rails too much : )
